Group Lessons and Events

The lesson listing is updated about once a month, unless something unexpected happens. If you see less than a week's worth of several types of events, an update should be on its way.
Our typical schedule includes Friday Beginner Workshops, Line Dancing on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, What's Next Classes and Workshops (not for beginners) on Mondays, and (seasonally) 4-Hour Group Classes on various week nights.

Fast and fabulous fun
Salsa Friday Beginner Workshop
Friday, January 30, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Always wanted to learn to dance but didn't know where to start?
Try Salsa! This sizzling Latin dance is a fantastic way to get moving with style and confidence on the dance floor. It works beautifully to a large variety of music (not just Latin Salsa!) and is a great solo dance too.
Missed last week? No problem! Each week we teach a 40-50 minute lesson, starting with the absolute basics in a fun, popular dance style. And then, finish off the hour with a little taste of another style that will be on the schedule the later in the season.
It makes an awesome #DateNight, #ParentsNightOut, or an evening of #FunWithFriends.

Intermediate Line Dance
When you're ready to level up Line Dance Line Dance Workshop
Monday, February 2, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
So you've danced around the walls a time or two and you're ready for more? Awesome. We'd love to have you! The dances taught on Monday nights tend to have a larger variety of figures, rhythms, and more complicated transitions than beginner line dances (taught on Tuesdays), so be prepared to battle wall-nesia and get your feet tangled on the path to LD success. But the result will be worth it, without doubt.

Price: $14/person in-studio or 4 workshops for $42/person .

Prerequisite: Dancers participating in these Intermediate LD workshops should be comfortable dancing common Line Dance figures including vines, turns, triple steps, etc. You should also be prepared to be challenged.

Exercises to Improve Balance
Technique What's Next Workshop
Monday, February 2, 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This exercise class is specifically geared towards improving your balance while dancing. Of course, that also means improving your balance while standing and walking, which really can't be a bad thing. You will sweat; you may be sore; you will probably complain (we all do); but we keep coming back for more.
Location: Sapphire Studio (downtown Christiansburg) and online

Beginner Line Dancing
You sure got to boogie Line Dance Line Dance Workshop
Tuesday, February 3, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Seriously - you need to get up and boogie!
Combine awesome music with expert instruction and you've got a beginner-friendly workshop that will get you moving in no time. Each BLD workshop features an exciting combination of ultra beginner and slightly more challenging dances, giving you the chance to get your feet under you and then challenge yourself to do more. Easiest dances are taught at the beginning of the evening, more challenging dances towards the end, with a bit of social dancing and practice time in between. So, if you've never done this before, don't be late!

Movement, Musicality, & More
West Coast Swing with Abi Intermediate West Coast Swing
Wednesday, February 4, 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Join us for private lessons and a workshop with guest instructor Abi Jennings!
Learn tricks to add a more playful vibe to your dancing in this stand-alone workshop. We'll practice several types of movement and how to add it to a dance on the fly. This is not a beginner workshop - participants should be familiar with several common moves in WCS such as Pushes, Passes, and Whips, and be able to dance at several different speeds. If you're unsure if this workshop is for you, talk to a Sapphire instructor or sign up for a private lesson.

Abi's diverse dance background consists of Lindy, Balboa, West Coast Swing, American Ballroom, Social Latin, Hustle and more! These all combine together to create a delightfully knowledgeable, charming, and fun teacher with a gift for passing along information.
She began dancing Lindy Hop in the middle of the Neo-Swing era in 1998 at the Derby in Hollywood. Growing up in Los Angeles, she always had interest in partner dancing because, as someone who had to lead in life, she aspired to understand what it meant to follow. After moving cross country, she discovered the West Coast Swing scene and has made herself at home.

Classic and romantic, the Waltz will carry you away like a gentle lullaby put into motion. This elegant dance will teach you grace and balance to beautiful music. With a slow pace and simple rhythm, Waltz is a wonderful dance to start your ballroom journey with.

Historic Dance (in casual clothes)
Historic Dance (English Country Dance) Workshop
Tuesday, February 10, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join the English Country Dancers of the New River Valley Historic Dance Society as we laugh, dance, and enjoy each other's company while learning dance new to us, but old as the 13 Colonies. This is the dancing you find in Pride and Prejudice, that George Washington did on vacation, and that evolved into modern Contra and Square dancing.
Beginners, groups, singles, and families are always welcome. Every dance will be taught by being broken down into simple components and cued while dancing. If you can walk, you can dance, and we'd love to have you join the set.

Price: This workshop is free, but a donation jar will be out during the dancing, if you feel like adding a couple of dollars. .

We offer a wide variety of dance styles for you to try, but for beginners we suggest Hustle, Swing, or Salsa for fast dances and Rumba, NC2, Waltz, or Bachata for slower dances. Lessons are 50 minutes long and will be scheduled on a first come, first choice basis in the afternoon or early evening.
