1. Gobbler's Gala Dance Party

Dressy TurkeyIt’s time to burn some calories in preparation for all the good holiday eatin’. Our Gobbler’s Gala this Saturday, November 9, will get you started with a Fox Trot lesson and keep moving with all the many great styles that we offer to songs that celebrate the season of eatin'. You will certainly earn yourself an extra piece of pie with this night full of dancing!

Speaking of pie...did you know that our lavish snack table at every dance is supplied by YOU, the dancers. Then YOU, the dancers, vote for your favorite snack of the night and the chef that gets the most votes gets awarded an awesome prize. Yes, it’s all true, and this month we are giving away a $20 gift certificate to Blackwater Loft and Notebooks… coffee shop and bookstore in one stop! http://floydbooksandcoffee.com/.

So get cookin’ and come dancin’!

4. December Group Classes in Blacksburg

Our Group Classes have been so much fun this year we want to squeeze one more session in before the new year. To do this we are condensing our 4 week class into two 2-hour classes! It's a slightly different format for the same great Group Classes. On Tuesdays, December 3 & 10, we will be teaching Level 1 Argentine Tango from 6:15-8:15, and on Wednesdays, December 4 & 11, we will be teaching Level 1 Hustle from 6:30-8:30.

This way we can get you in and out between Thanksgiving and Christmas without interfering with your holidays. And you thought you were going to have to wait until 2014 to take a class! http://www.sapphiredance.com/groupclasses.php

5. Yoga Anyone?

yogaWe are looking ahead to the new year and thinking about new class possibilities here at Sapphire.  One of these possibilities is a morning yoga class taught by Jennifer Speiden. Jennifer, in addition to being a student at Sapphire, is a Yoga Alliance registered 500-hour yoga teacher as well as a licensed physical therapist, certified Pilates instructor, and dance instructor.

We are trying to get a sense of interest in morning yoga classes.  Classes will most likely be held Wednesday mornings either 8:00 – 9:00 am or 9:30 – 10:30 am.  If you are interested, please let us know by replying with your time preference. If you are interested in yoga classes, but cannot attend Wednewday mornings, let us know that too.

Thanks for your help and input. These are exciting times at Sapphire!

6. Dance Parties, JAMs, Etc. - a survey for your thoughts

As we plan our 2014 Dance Party themes we want hear which ones you like and which ones you could do without.

All of our Dance Parties start with a lesson and then we have open dancing which includes all the many styles that we teach. To give each dance party it’s own unique spin, we have a theme that dictates the music, the dance featured in the lesson, and sometimes how we dress!

Let us know which themes you've liked best from this year and before (here's a list of past events) and which ones you could live without. Suggest a new theme, too. But, please do it soon - we're working on next year's schedule right now!

Also, just to add another exciting element to our dance parties, we are thinking of trying to have a live band at some of our dances. We'd love to hear what you think of the idea and if you have any bands you'd like to recommend.

Finally, let us know what you think of the DanceJAMs - the experiment we started a few years ago.

Email us with your thoughts, questions, and suggestions. Thanks for your input!

7. These Shoes Are Meant for Dancing

shoesGive a girl the correct footwear and she can conquer the world. - Bette Midler

Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life. - Anon

The right shoe can make everything different. - Jimmy Choo

Momma always says there’s an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes. Where they’re going. Where they’ve been. - Forest Gump

Bette Midler forgot to mention that footwear is important for men, too, and Forest Gump could tell where someone was going, but not who they are dancing with!

Having the right tools for the job is important in any activity, and dancing is no exception. Of course you can start off in regular street shoes, but good quality dance shoes are an excellent way to upgrade your dancing, actually making it easier to do the things you want to do.

So, we have some shoe quotes of our own... specifically about dance shoes bought right here at Sapphire Ballroom. As one of our contributors said, "[Good] shoes have all the important qualities when it comes to ballroom dancing. Do you know what they are? The Three C's: Color, Comfort, and Could dance all night....AND not necessarily in that order!"

Come by sometime to see what all the talk is about. (The shoes above are Luzia by Nueva Epoca in Black and Red Suede.)

Black Shoesspace“I was on a cruise ship, and while dancing 11 nights straight, by the 4th or 5th night, these were the only shoes I would wear, the only ones that were still comfortable.” - Matt Swift, wearing his Werner Kern Style 28033 in Black.

Gold Shoesspace“I love my gold dance shoes because they sparkle!” - Deana Kelsey, putting her Anna Kern 598-60 in Gold.

“I have the same gold shoes that Deana does, and have to admit, I got them because they are pretty. But, they are also pretty comfy. I never thought I would be able to dance in heels that high!” - Debbi Richey

Red ShoesChevro-antikspace“These dark bronze Werner Kern shoes are like an optical illusion! The color matches everything and the heels look deceptively high, much higher than they feel. So, they are great dance shoes, so great I bought a pair in red too. It's just too bad the dancing ends before my feet wear out! Oh well, I can dance again tomorrow! And, in these shoes, who wouldn't want to?” - Patty Marickovich, wearing Werner Kern in Red and Chevro Antik.
Shoesspace“They are my favorite because they are so different. You don’t see many people wearing shoes like this. I get a ton of compliments on them...and they are really comfortable. They add a little sparkle to my step.” - Leland Stevens, wearing Cordoba by Nueva Epoca.
